Shake up your approach to work or boost your skills with this exciting Girls in Tech Phoenix Design Thinking Bootcamp!

We’re proud to partner with McKinsey, Marsh, Nike, McKesson, and ASU E + I to deliver an intensive, hands-on, 2-day design thinking workshop.

Expect to walk away:

  • Knowing how to practically apply design thinking practices in the workplace.
  • Feeling more confident thinking in-the-moment.
  • With tactics and tools you can use straight away.

The course dives into design thinking theory and examples, with the opportunity to engage in a real-life design thinking challenge to test your newfound creative skills.

Requirements
The requirements for participation and success in this Design Thinking intensive are threefold

  • Personal: curiosity, patience, empathy, and an insatiable desire to problem-solve
  • Social: group work, communication skills, and some interviewing of strangers (potential users)
  • Technical: access to a computer and very minimal design skills(document layout & sketching)

What to bring
Students should provide their own writing instrument, note or sketchbook, and wear comfortable clothing and shoes.

No previous design thinking or particular technical skills are required to attend this course!

2-day Program Timeline

Day One: Empathy to Insight & Problems as Opportunities

  • Workshop 1: Design Research
    • Example topics: Intro to design thinking; Design Research Methods; Empathy/Problempathy Mapping; Ethnographic Research Methods
      Participant workload: Interactive discussion; Conduct research; Report back
      Workshop 2: Ideation tools & tactics
    • Example Topics: Problem Squared; How Might We? What if?
      Participant workload: Interactive Discussion; Group Co-creation Methods; Develop Research

Day Two: Insights to Action

  • Workshop 3: Insight evaluation and activation
    • Example topics: How Wow Matrix; Project planning; Impact measurement
      Participant workload: Project presentation by participants

About the speaker
This intensive two-day bootcamp will be facilitated by Drew Tucker, Director of Strategy at Kertis – a Louisville-based creative agency.

His experience in facilitation and workshop design, research design and execution, and organizational and systems design will make him a great guide as you learn design thinking fundamentals.

FEATURED MENTOR: Crystal Lehman

A strategic executive accountable for the technology function. Provides vision and execution capabilities and a drive for pragmatic commercial outcomes as well as elegant, innovative technology solutions. A strategic adviser to the executives, partnering and assisting them to drive execution to all people in their organizations, through thought based technology and process.

Crystal was born and raised in Las Vegas, where she started her first hospitality and gaming role. She worked in the Call Center and constantly found needs to optimize and use technology to make her team better and eliminate manual work. She was able to work on projects like the first direct booking engine from Expedia for their system direct as opposed to receiving faxes and having someone input. She worked on Starwood’s first integrated gaming property with a full integrated booking engine as well. It was then she was offered a role working one of the biggest Vegas hospitality and gaming technology companies, where she learned how to code, mostly working on integrations. She also held roles in product management and client engagement. After several years and opening hundreds of new gaming hotel properties all over the world, she was assigned to the Cosmopolitan Las Vegas opening where she was able to continue coding, but also assembled Agile teams into verticals and created the devops process that surrounded each suite of products with over 160 different applications to support, keep updated as well as custom applications for gaming loyalty and marketing offers.

She then had the opportunity to move to Phoenix working at a Technology delivery company that specialized in white labeling applications for loyalty and travel programs to companies like USAA and American Express. They used modern services in Azure cloud to create new apps and re-platformed all the companies legacy systems in just a few years and allowed them to sell a portion of the company for 150 million dollars. Her roles at ICE included Solutions Architect, Exec director of Product, and Dir of Software Security. After the sale she then moved to BrightFI where she ha been working to deliver banking technology for the last few years as the CTO.
