Girls in Tech – Phoenix is sponsoring and mentoring an all-girls FIRST Tech Challenge robotics team. These girls are from ASU Pre Academy and Shadow Ridge High School. The team meets weekly to design and build the robot. The robot will grab and shoot rings to score points.
This year because of the pandemic, the team will be playing matches virtually and will be judged virtually. In the face to face competition, alliances of two teams each compete head to head with their robots to shoot rings at different heights, while racing against the clock to achieve the highest score possible in Ultimate Goal presented by Qualcomm. This year’s game is played on a 12×12 foot field, which is divided by the into two zones – the Loading Zone and the Building Zone.
The competitors each have the opportunity to compete in 3 skirmish matches to give each team the optimum chance to redesign and adapt their robot to any problems they may encounter. The girls are excited to continue learning and growing together through this amazing opportunity, reaching engineering heights they never had before.
The team is still looking for five more team members. No experience necessary. We are also looking for sponsors for funding. Please email Melissa Drake if you are interested at [email protected]
FIRST® Tech Challenge students learn to think like engineers. Teams build robots from a reusable kit of parts, develop strategies, document their progress, and compete head to head. The girls on this team grow together, learning more about engineering and programming at each meeting. This project teaches the girls problem solving, technology skills, teamwork, and so much more.
