Support the Arizona Sustainability Alliance
November 9-10 | AZ CoWork in Scottsdale
Sponsored by Marsh
Interested in giving back to our local nonprofit community while learning new entrepreneurial skills? #HackingforHumanity is a global hackathon, where you can pitch your ideas for an app to help local nonprofit Arizona Sustainability Alliance solve landfill pollution. Within two days, we’ll form teams, create a tech solution, and pitch in front of judges where one team will win and Arizona Sustainability Alliance will put your solution to use! You don’t need any technical skills to contribute.
How can Arizona solve landfill pollution and become a leader in recycling and composting efforts?
Americans generate approximately 254 million tons of trash each year, over one million from the City of Phoenix alone. Only one-third of this waste is composted and recycled, the rest is sent directly to landfills. As of 2019, many countries are refusing to accept recycling imports from the U.S. Many cities do not have the infrastructure to support their own recycling program, and therefore some cities, like Surprise, AZ, have been forced to divert recycling straight to the landfill, causing more land pollution and greater waste.
What Happens at the Hackathon?
After an intro session laying out the details of the assignment and the chosen platform, each team will decide on their individual approach to creating an application and will spend the majority of their time building it out. There will be a keynote speech delivered by a local industry expert. Then teams will build both a web and mobile application prototype. Mentors from local companies will volunteer to help guide the products, troubleshoot coding challenges, and work with teams to bring their ideas to life. Mentors will be present to guide attendees throughout the event.
The Winning Solution
At the end of the competition, each team will have the opportunity to pitch their solution to an experienced panel of judges. There will be prizes and a small celebration to acknowledge participant achievements.
